White House receives House Judiciary chair Jerry Nadler's request for documents in corruption probe

The White House said Monday that it received, and plans to respond to, a request for documents sought by House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler as his committee kicks off investigations into alleged obstruction of justice and corruption.

Rep. Nadler, D-N.Y., had announced a day earlier that the Judiciary Committee, which is in charge of passing articles of impeachment in the House, planned to issue document requests to more than 60 people related to President Donald Trump.

In an interview Sunday on ABC News' "This Week," Nadler said that the president's son, Donald Trump, Jr., and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, would be among that list of more than five dozen individuals. Other officials in the White House, the Justice Department and the Trump Organization would also be asked for documents, Nadler said.

The Judiciary Committee will "begin the investigations to present the case ... about obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power" to the American people, Nadler said.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Monday morning that Nadler had sent the request. "The House Judiciary Committee's letter has been received by the White House. The counsel's Office and relevant White House officials will review it and respond at the appropriate time," Sanders said in a statement.

Nadler said he believes it is "very clear" that Trump himself has obstructed justice.

But the committee leader said it was still too soon to make a decision about whether to impeach Trump.

Republicans in the House, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., have accused Nadler and other Democrats of pursuing Trump's impeachment regardless of whether there was sufficient evidence of wrongdoing.
