National Cancer Institute Director Ned Sharpless will be acting FDA commissioner

National Cancer Institute Director Ned Sharpless will serve as acting FDA Commissioner when Scott Gottlieb steps down from the agency next month, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Tuesday.

The administration is currently searching for a permanent replacement, Azar told the House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee Hearing. Gottlieb announced his resignation last week.

"There will be no let-up in the agency's focus, from ongoing efforts on drug approvals and combating the opioid crisis to modernizing food safety and addressing the rapid rise in youth use of e-cigarettes," Azar said in a statement.
