Dow drop nearly 600 points as virus outbreak, data stoke growth worry - Kitco NEWS

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street's major averages tumbled more than 1% on Friday as the spreading coronavirus outbreak along with sluggish U.S. economic data and a mixed batch of corporate earnings fueled concerns about global growth.

The S&P 500 .SPX is down nearly 3% from its closing high hit earlier in January, as businesses struggle with supply problems from the coronavirus epidemic that has killed 213 people in China and been declared a global emergency.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it had issued a quarantine order for all repatriated individuals from China in California.

Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) lost 2.38% and American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) fell 3.50% after the companies said they would suspend all flights to mainland China.

Economists fear the coronavirus could have a bigger impact than Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed about 800 people between 2002 and 2003 at an estimated cost of $33 billion to the global economy, since China's share of the world economy is now far greater.

Adding to the growth concerns was U.S. data showing consumer spending rose steadily in December, but wage gains indicated moderate growth in consumption and business investment contracted, putting the economy on a slower pace this year. Additionally, a report on manufacturing in the Midwest hit a four-year low for January.

"We wouldn't think this would be terribly prolonged but certainly it matters today and the data outside of Amazon has been certainly on the soft side," said Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments in Charlotte.

"So we don't have the buttress of super strong data to kind of turn the narrative away from the obvious uncertainty that is out there with this virus,"

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) was a bright spot, surging 8.39% on better-than-expected results for the holiday-quarter that pushed it back into the $1 trillion market capitalization club.

Gains in Amazon helped the consumer discretionary index .SPLRCD rise 1.39%, the only sector on the plus side. Energy .SPNY was by far the worst performer, tumbling 3.25%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) and Chevron Corp (CVX.N) were the primary drags on the sector as each dropped more than 4% after disappointing results.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI fell 525.63 points, or 1.82%, to 28,333.81, the S&P 500 .SPX lost 48.35 points, or 1.47%, to 3,235.31 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 110.89 points, or 1.19%, to 9,188.05.

Both the Dow and S&P 500 were on pace for their worst weekly performance since early August.

Visa Inc (V.N) fell 3.70% after its quarterly revenue missed estimates and the payments network warned of incentives hitting 2020 results.

International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) gained 4.74% after it named a new chief executive officer.

Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 3.22-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 3.44-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

The S&P 500 posted 33 new 52-week highs and 12 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 48 new highs and 107 new lows.

FDA approves first drug to treat peanut allergies in children - CNN

The drug, Palforzia, can be used for children between 4 and 17 years old. It's designed to minimize the incidence and severity of a child's allergic reaction to peanuts, as even a small amount of exposure can be harmful to children with the allergy.
Children are left attempting to avoid exposure to peanuts to avoid reactions. Though that will continue to be necessary with Palforzia, the risk of a reaction will be lessened, says Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a statement.
"When used in conjunction with peanut avoidance, Palforzia provides an FDA-approved treatment option to help reduce the risk of these allergic reactions in children with peanut allergy," he said.
More than 2.5% of all American children are allergic to peanuts, according to The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. It's one of the most common food allergies in the country.
For those allergic, exposure to peanuts can result in symptoms like cramping, indigestion, hives, swelling and even fainting or dizziness.

How it works

The new treatment essentially works by exposing children to controlled dosages of peanut protein until they've reached a maintenance level.
In a trial submitted by Aimmune Therapeutics, the manufacturers of the drug, two-thirds of children were able to eat the equivalent of two peanuts with no allergic symptoms after the months-long treatment. Patients may be required to take the therapy for six months or longer, and about 9% of the children dosed with the drug had to stop treatment because their allergic reactions were so severe.
Palforzia comes in a powder form that is made from actual peanuts, and should be mixed with semi-solid food like yogurt or applesauce. Because taking the drug still has a risk of anaphylaxis, patients will only be able to take the drug in a health care setting or pharmacy, so providers can monitor how the child reacts.
Providers will also have to counsel patients or their caregivers to have an injectable epinephrine drug with them that can be ready to be used at all times.

Delta, American suspend all U.S.-China flights - Yahoo Finance

FILE PHOTO: A Delta Air Lines flight is pushed put of its gate at the airport in Salt Lake City

By David Shepardson and Tracy Rucinski

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc and American Airlines Group Inc decided on Friday to temporarily suspend all remaining U.S.-China flights after the U.S. State Department elevated a travel advisory over concerns about the coronavirus.

The United States told citizens on Thursday not to travel to China due to an epidemic that has infected nearly 10,000 people and been declared a global emergency.

Pilots and flight attendants have been demanding airlines stop flights to the country, with American Airlines' pilots filing a lawsuit on Thursday seeking an immediate halt.

"The decision to file a lawsuit was made out of concern for the safety of our pilots," said Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association which represents American's pilots.

As of Thursday United Airlines Holdings Inc was still planning to operate some flights from San Francisco, even after its pilots union told its members they would be allowed to drop their trip without pay if they were concerned about flying to the country.

Delta and American had both announced lighter schedules to China earlier this week.

On Friday, American said operations to and from China would be halted starting on Friday through March 27. The carrier will continue to fly to Hong Kong.

Delta said its last China-bound flight departing the United States will leave on Monday, Feb. 3, with the last U.S. return flight departing China on Feb. 5.

The Delta suspension is set to last through April 30.

Other airlines that have stopped their flights to mainland China include Air France KLM SA, British Airways, Germany's Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic.

Coronavirus Travel: 3 Major U.S. Airlines Suspend China Flights - The New York Times

Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines said on Friday morning that they were suspending service between the United States and China — drastically limiting service just hours before the Trump administration issued new travel restrictions of its own.

American Airlines said it was suspending all flights to and from mainland China immediately through March 27. Delta and United said they would suspend service starting on Feb. 6 to accommodate customers and employees. United said it expected to resume operations on March 28. Delta said its suspension would last through April 30.

American Airlines and United said they would still operate flights between the United States and Hong Kong. Delta does not fly to that city.

Share prices in all three airlines were down for the day — nearly 4 percent for United, more than 3 percent for American and nearly 2.5 percent for Delta — as concerns about the virus led to a broad market decline. The S&P 500 was down nearly 2 percent.

In a statement, Delta said that its last flight to China from the United States would depart on Monday and that its last flight to the United States from China would leave on Wednesday. United said its last flight to China would be on Tuesday, while the last flight from China to the United States would depart on Wednesday.

On Friday afternoon, the Trump administration said it was suspending entry into the United States by any foreign nationals who have traveled to China in the last 14 days, excluding the immediate family members of American citizens or permanent residents. It also said it would funnel all flights from China to just a few airports, including Kennedy International in New York, O’Hare in Chicago, and San Francisco International Airport.

Countries surrounding China, including Mongolia, Russia and Singapore, have moved to shut their borders.

On Thursday, the State Department raised its travel advisory to Level 4 — “Do not travel” — a rating reserved for situations in which the government expects to have very limited ability to help citizens abroad. The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency because of the spreading virus, though it opposed restrictions on travel or trade with China.

Airlines had already begun limiting service to China this week, offering fee waivers for those traveling to the country. Delta said customers whose flights were affected by the suspension could visit the My Trips section of its website to learn how to request a refund and rebook travel.

Travelers who bought trip insurance could find that in general, most plans won’t protect against trip cancellations in scenarios like the coronavirus outbreak.

“Fear of travel, travel advisories and destinations being inaccessible due to this illness are typically not covered risks under travel insurance,” Carol Mueller, vice president for marketing at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, said in an email. To be covered, travelers would have to buy more expensive “cancel for any reason” coverage, and even then, it would cover only about half of the total trip cost.

In 2018, more than 8.5 million passengers traveled between the United States and China, according to data from the United States Transportation Department. United carried about 17 percent of those passengers, second only to Air China’s 19 percent. Delta flew about 10 percent of those passengers, while American Airlines accounted for about 9 percent.

Nearly two-thirds of those who traveled between the two countries in 2018 flew on a handful of Chinese airlines, none of which immediately responded to requests for comment Friday on any plans to halt or modify service.

Major cargo companies — United Parcel Service, FedEx and DHL — said that they were monitoring the spread of the virus and that they had urged employees to take basic safety precautions. DHL said services in Hubei Province — which includes Wuhan, the city at the center of the virus outbreak — had been suspended because of strict controls put in place by the local government.

In a research report this week, DHL warned that should local lockdowns in China extend into February, they could affect the supply chains of sectors including automotive, pharmaceutical and medical supplies, and high-tech manufacturing for the optical electronics and semiconductors industries. This week, Tesla, the electric-car maker, said production at its new Shanghai factory could be affected by a local order calling for a temporary halt to operations.

On Friday, Cruise Lines International Association, an industry group that represents some of the world’s largest cruise operators, including Carnival and Royal Caribbean, said in a statement that its members would deny boarding to any person who has traveled through mainland China within the past 14 days.

Tariro Mzezewa, Mike Arnot and Sarah Firshein contributed reporting.

FDA approves first-ever peanut allergy treatment | TheHill - The Hill

A first-of-its-kind drug meant to treat peanut allergies has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Aimmune Therapeutics is behind the drug, called Palforzia, which exposes patients to small amounts of peanuts and helps build up their resistance. It announced its FDA approval in a press release Friday

“Not only is Palforzia the first approved therapy for peanut allergy, but it is the first approved therapy for any food allergy,” Daniel Adelman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Aimmune Therapeutics said in a press release.

The press release also noted more than 1,200 patients and their families participated in clinical trials of the drug.

The company first announced that their drug was showing promise in 2018, after a study showed the treatment allowed children and adolescents to consume small amounts of peanuts without suffering a serious reaction.

The CEO of Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), Lisa Gable, said that the new drug "fills a long-standing need in the treatment of peanut allergy."

"Peanut allergy carries an overwhelming psychosocial burden that impacts patients and their families daily – peanuts are everywhere, and the threat of a severe reaction related to an accidental peanut exposure dominates families’ daily lives,” Gable said in the press release.

Aimmune Therapeutics notes that peanut allergies have jumped rapidly in recent years. From 1997 to 2008, the United States saw peanut allergies triple from 1-in-250 children to 1-in-70 children.

Hubei Province's local health commission reported 45 new deaths from the outbreak on Friday, bringing the total to 249. The province confirmed 1,347 new cases of infection on Friday, with the total reaching 7,153 by the end of the day.

All times below in Eastern time.

3:50 pm: Trump issues mandatory quarantine, denies foreign nationals entry

The Trump administration is issuing a mandatory quarantine for U.S. citizens who've visited Hubei province in the last 14 days and denying entry to foreign nationals who "pose a risk of transmitting" the virus in the U.S., administration officials said in declaring the coronavirus a public health emergency. "Any US citizen returning to the United States who has been in the Hubei province in the previous 14 days will be subject to up to 14 days of mandatory quarantine to ensure they're provided proper medical care and health screening," Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said.

10:30 am: Sweden confirms first case

10:15 am: Delta, American will suspend all China flights starting Feb. 6

Delta Air Lines and American Airlines are planning to suspend their already reduced service to China as the rapid spread of coronavirus hurts demand to the country for airlines around the world. Delta said its China service suspension will begin Feb. 6 and last through April 30, but it will continue to operate the service until then to "ensure customers looking to exit China have options to do so." Dozens of carriers including United, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and others have slashed or suspended service to China because of the outbreak. Delta was the first in the U.S. to suspend service altogether.

10 am: Italy declares coronavirus emergency

Italy declared a six-month state of emergency after two Chinese tourists in the country tested positive for the coronavirus in the first cases detected in the country. The move will enable authorities to make rapid decisions if needed. Italy has already banned all flights to and from China. The two patients came from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus, and fell ill during their trip to Italy.

6:50 am: Singapore, Mongolia ban Chinese travelers

Singapore's health ministry banned entry to all Chinese visitors and foreigners with a recent history of travel to China. The move, which effectively shuts out the island's largest group of visitors, takes effect Saturday. It is the first Southeast Asian country to implement a travel ban for China travelers to contain the outbreak. The announcement came after the U.S. State Department raised its travel advisory on Thursday for China from Level 3 to Level 4. Mongolia also said it's closing all ports of entry to and from China, giving citizens until Feb. 6 to get home.

Delta, American Airlines Suspending All U.S. Flights to China - NBC New York

Delta and American Airlines announced Friday they have decided to temporarily suspend all U.S. flights to China. Delta's suspension begins next week -- and lasting through April. American Airlines flights will be halted as of today. The suspensions are due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus that has infected nearly 10,000 people and killed more than 200 across the globe.

Between now and Feb. 5, Delta will continue to operate flights to ensure customers looking to exit China have options to do so, the company said.

The last China-bound Delta flight departing the U.S. will leave on Monday, Feb. 3 with the last return flight back to the U.S. departing China on Feb. 5. The airline will continue to monitor the situation closely and may make additional adjustments as the situation continues to evolve.

Customers whose travel plans are affected can go to the My Trips section of delta.com to help them understand their options, including:

  • Reaccommodation to flights after April 30
  • Requesting a refund
  • Contacting Delta to discuss additional options.

Changes to the schedule will be effective on delta.com beginning Feb. 1.

For customers with bookings on flights through Feb. 5, Delta will continue to offer a change fee waiver for customers who wish to adjust their travel plans for U.S.-China flights.

Delta currently operates 42 weekly flights between the U.S. and China, including daily service connecting Beijing and Detroit and Seattle, and Shanghai and Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and Seattle.

Later in the day, passengers wearing surgical masks were seen arriving at Newark Airport from Shanghai and Beijing — aboard what could be among some of the final flights to the U.S. from those areas until the springtime.

A Chinese airline is offering travelers a rare deal: a flight from Hong Kong to New York for $201.

But there’s a catch: You have to stop off in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the center of the global coronavirus outbreak.

Business Insider on Friday found a May 20 flight from the budget airline China Southern for just $201 on the travel-comparison site Kayak. The offer was first reported by Bloomberg, which found an even cheaper flight, for $193.

The site showed the flight, from Hong Kong International Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, departing at 11:25 a.m. local time and arriving 23 hours and five minutes later, at 10:30 p.m. ET the same day. (Hong Kong and New York have a 13-hour time difference.)

The journey comprises a roughly two-hour flight from Hong Kong to Wuhan, followed by a six-hour layover in Wuhan, and a 14-hour flight from Wuhan to New York.

Direct flights from Hong Kong to New York on the same day were significantly more expensive, with nonstop Cathay Pacific flights listed on Kayak for about $1,200.

Wuhan has been quarantined to prevent further spreading the coronavirus that has been reported in at least 20 other countries.

The virus, officially known as 2019-nCoV, can spread from human to human and has since infected some people who have not recently traveled to Wuhan.

The vast majority of cases are in China, where almost 10,000 people have been infected and more than 200 people have died.

FDA Approves First Drug for Peanut Allergy - The Wall Street Journal

The new drug is derived from peanut powder, and doses contain the equivalent of small amounts of peanuts. Photo: saul loeb/Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first treatment for peanut allergy, providing a new option for the growing number of children and their families dealing with the life-threatening condition.

The new treatment, named Palforzia from Aimmune Therapeutics Inc., is designed to work by exposing patients to the very substance they had been taught to avoid. The drug is derived from peanut powder, and doses contain the equivalent of small amounts of peanuts.

To build up their resistance, children ages 4 to 17 years who are prescribed the new therapy start with escalating doses of Palforzia mixed with apple sauce or other food each day, and after reaching a certain dose continue on that dose indefinitely.

Aimmune said the list price for Palforzia will be $890 a month, or about $10,680 a year. Roth Capital Research analyst Zegbeh Jallah estimates the drug could generate annual sales of $1 billion by 2026.

A study showed the treatment increased the amount of peanuts that children could tolerate during a controlled “challenge” without having an allergic reaction, though it didn’t directly demonstrate whether the therapy protects against accidental encounters with peanuts.

Aimmune says the treatment isn’t intended to allow allergy patients to begin eating peanut-butter sandwiches, but rather to reduce the risk of reactions after accidental exposures.

Daniel Adelman, Aimmune’s chief medical officer, said on a conference call the drug is “intended to desensitize patients to peanut protein. So while they still must practice avoidance, it can mitigate allergic reactions after accidental consumption.”

Palforzia itself increased the risk of allergic reactions and use of emergency epinephrine shots during the 12 months of treatment preceding the food challenge.

Children who take the new therapy are still advised to continue to avoid peanuts and to have access to emergency epinephrine shots, such as EpiPen, in case of reactions.

Still, some doctors and patients say the drug will help reduce families’ anxiety about the risk of exposure in everyday life.

“It’s a big deal,” said Dr. Subhadra Siegel, chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y. “The thought of relieving that anxiety and being able to eat in a restaurant without worry. These are huge debilitating things for families with food allergies.”

A second new treatment could become available later this year if the FDA approves DBV Technologies SA’s proposed new skin patch. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. also is developing an experimental peanut allergy drug.

If you or someone in your family has a peanut allergy, would you try this treatment? Why or why not? Join the conversation below.

Peanuts are among the most common foods that trigger allergies. A 2017 study estimated peanut-allergy prevalence had increased 21% since 2010, and that it affected nearly 2.5% of American children.

In people who are allergic, peanuts can cause gastrointestinal problems and anaphylactic shock, a potentially deadly reaction that should be treated with an emergency epinephrine injection.

The standard way to manage the condition is to avoid exposure by scrutinizing food ingredients, and to have access to epinephrine for emergencies.

Some allergists have treated peanut allergies by giving children small amounts of peanut flour, but until now there hadn’t been an FDA-approved treatment.

The Aimmune treatment builds on the exposure approach by placing doses of peanut powder in capsules, which are broken open to sprinkle on food.

Aimmune says its doses are precisely measured to ensure a more consistent amount of the allergy-causing component of peanuts than if families or doctors try to give children small amounts of peanut flour or kernels. Patients start with a small dose and escalate it gradually over six months. Thereafter, they stay on a maintenance dose that is equivalent to about one peanut kernel a day.

In clinical testing of the drug, children with peanut allergies were studied to see how much peanut flour they could tolerate before having an allergic reaction, to set a baseline. The so-called peanut challenge was conducted in medical facilities, with epinephrine on hand.

After taking Palforzia or placebo for one year, the study subjects underwent another peanut challenge in which they were given escalating amounts of either placebo or peanut flour.

Noah Townsend of Orlando, Fla., enrolled in a clinical trial for Palforzia in 2016, when he was 10 years old and accustomed to avoiding peanuts most of his life. He had an allergic reaction to peanut butter when he was about 18 months old.

“Just imagine your parents had always told you, ‘This was poison. This will kill you.’ And now we’re saying, ‘Eat it,’” said Noah’s mother, Wendy Cramer Townsend.

At the start of the study, the equivalent of one-third of a peanut kernel triggered an allergic reaction in Noah. After 12 months of treatment, he was able to take the equivalent of about 14 peanuts without having a reaction, Ms. Cramer Townsend said.

He continues to take Palforzia, which has given him more independence and his parents more peace of mind. “He’ll never have a peanut butter sandwich but if he goes out with friends to some Chinese restaurant and accidentally gets a peanut, he’s OK,” Ms. Townsend said.

The clinical trial found that about 67% of children who took Palforzia were able to ingest the equivalent of at least two peanut kernels without having significant allergic symptoms, compared with 4% of children who received a placebo. Palforzia also limited the severity of symptoms compared with placebo.

About 14% of Palforzia users had systemic allergic reactions during the treatment period, versus 3% of those in the placebo group.

The increased risk of reactions raised concerns among some allergists. “Patients undergoing this treatment end up needing epinephrine twice as often as the patients who are not undergoing treatment,” Dr. John Kelso, an allergist with Scripps Health in San Diego, said at a September 2018 meeting of an FDA advisory committee considering Aimmune’s proposed treatment. “So it is not clear to me that this treatment is effective.”

Another FDA committee member, Ira Finegold, a professor of clinical immunology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, voted in favor of Palforzia because, he said, “even though this isn’t perfect, and it’s obviously not for everybody, it’ll go a long way in helping patients and their quality of life.”

Steve Tilles, Aimmune’s senior medical director, said the adverse events associated with Palforzia dissipated as treatment continued.

State Department issues 'do not travel' advisory for China, asks those in the country to consider leaving

The U.S. State Department raised its travel advisory for China from Level 3 to Level 4, citing the coronavirus outbreak in that country.

"Do not travel to China due to novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China," the department said in its notice about the Level 4 advisory.

"Those currently in China should consider departing using commercial means," it said in an online statement.

The new warning comes after the WHO on Thursday declared the outbreak a global health emergency. That rare designation helps the international agency mobilize financial and political support to contain the outbreak.

On Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also confirmed the nation's first human-to-human transmission of the virus. Illinois health officials said in a CDC press briefing that the new patient is the spouse of a Chicago woman who brought the infection back from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak.

On Friday morning Beijing time, China's National Health Commission said the virus has killed 213 people as the number of cases rose to 9,692.

The State Department only flags a handful of countries as Level 4, its highest level "due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks." Around the time of its new designation for China, the State Department had already marked the following as Level 4:

  • Iraq
  • Iran
  • Mali
  • Central African Republic
  • Venezuela
  • Yemen
  • South Sudan
  • Burkina Faso
  • Syria
  • Somalia
  • Afghanistan
  • North Korea
  • Libya

IBM CEO Virginia Rometty is retiring - Engadget

IBM CEO Virginia Rometty, one of the most prominent female leaders in tech, is stepping down on April 6th, 2020. She will still serve as Executive Chairman of the Board through the end of the year, but she's retiring completely after that. Rometty will be replaced as CEO by Arvind Krishna, who currently runs the company's cloud business and who was a key figure in IBM's Red Hat acquisition. She called Krishna "the right CEO for the next era at IBM."

Rometty said in a statement:

"Arvind has grown IBM's Cloud and Cognitive Software business and led the largest acquisition in the company's history. Through his multiple experiences running businesses in IBM, Arvind has built an outstanding track record of bold transformations and proven business results, and is an authentic, values-driven leader. He is well-positioned to lead IBM and its clients into the cloud and cognitive era."

IBM first revealed its Red Hat acquisition back in 2018, announcing that it's purchasing the American multinational software firm and largest Linux distributor for $34 billion. Red Hat CEO James Whitehurst joined IBM as part of the acquisition -- in fact, the board just voted him as the new IBM President, and he'll step into the role in April, as well.

Rometty led IBM during trying times, as the company was struggling to transition its business to focus on new technologies. IBM acquired 65 companies and sold off others that weren't making as much profit under her leadership. IDC chief analyst Frank Gens told The New York Times: "It's been her eight-year project to reposition the company. And after the positive report last quarter, she's declared victory and retired." By appointing Krishna and Whitehurst as the company's leaders, IBM is saying that it's putting a lot more focus on cloud and cognitive computing going forward.

US yield curve inversion raises growth concerns - Financial Times

Line chart of Difference between three-month and 10-year Treasury yields (basis points) showing Recession signal flashes as coronavirus spreads

The US Treasury yield curve, whose movements are watched by traders for harbingers of recession, has become inverted again as the intensifying coronavirus outbreak revived fears of a global growth slowdown.

For the first time since October, the yield on three-month US Treasury bills jumped above that on the benchmark 10-year note. An inversion of this portion of the yield curve — which charts yields on debt of different maturities — has preceded every recession of the last half century.

The gap widened to as much as minus 3.9 basis points on Thursday after the yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 1.5 per cent.

Fearing the economic damage from the fast-spreading coronavirus, investors eschewed global equities and sought the relative safety of government debt, sending yields, which move inversely to price, lower.

The death toll climbed to 170 people on Thursday, with more than 7,700 people sickened in mainland China. Adding to angst in the US, the Centers for Disease Control confirmed the first case in the country of person-to-person transmission of the virus, adding to the five Americans who have already been diagnosed.

“Every morning we have a new number that seems to be double the previous number and that gets people on edge and gets people wondering . . . how many more millions of people will be quarantined?” said Kathy Jones, chief fixed-income strategist at Charles Schwab.

According to James Sweeney, chief economist and chief investment officer for the Americas at Credit Suisse, the impact on growth is likely to be sizeable.

“There is no doubt that this poses a substantial downside risk to Chinese growth immediately and global growth in the next few months,” he warned.

Millions in China have been quarantined, businesses shuttered and holidays extended to contain the outbreak. Airlines have halted flights, and the UK Foreign Office has joined others in warning against all but essential travel to China. Also on Thursday, Russia shut its land border with its south-eastern neighbour.

The US Treasury yield curve inverted on several occasions last year for the first time since the global financial crisis as trade tensions between the US and China frayed. The Federal Reserve responded to global growth concerns then by slashing US interest rates by a cumulative 75 basis points between July and October.

Jay Powell, Fed chairman, said at a news conference on Wednesday that the central bank was “carefully monitoring” the outbreak and its impact on the economic outlook, adding that “there will clearly be implications at least in the near term for Chinese output”.

Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, said the raging public health crisis could prompt a similar reaction from the central bank.

“Coronavirus has replaced the trade war as the Fed’s primary unknown, and makes them err on the side of easing,” he said.

According to David Lafferty, chief market strategist at Natixis Investment Managers, that may not be the only reason to think the Fed will cut rates further this year.

“The more likely candidate for a rate cut sooner rather than later would be continued downward pressure on inflation,” he said, adding that Mr Powell sent a very dovish signal when he said the central bank is not comfortable with inflation running persistently below its 2 per cent target, as it has been.

Since the start of the year, traders have become convinced there will be one cut by the Fed this year and have sharply increased their bets on two, according to futures prices compiled by Bloomberg.
